In less than a month, pandemic-related school nutrition waivers will expire, leaving already struggling schools with less options to continue feeding the thousands of children that rely on them for their next meal. As a result of making your voices heard, the extension of school meal waivers continues to be at the forefront of discussions in Congress—but our work is not done.
On June 8, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, made an impassioned plea to her colleagues on the Senate floor to cosponsor and pass the Support Kids Not Red Tape Act of 2022.
“What happens when school food staff are faced with challenges like these? Kids don’t eat… If we don’t act, one-third of our schools will be in such dire situation they may not be able to continue the school lunch program at all,” said Senator Stabenow.
