U.S. Representatives Katie Porter (D-CA) and Pete. Aguilar (D-CA) introduced two bills to expand access to school meals at no cost to all students regardless of household income.

  • H.R. 3112, the “No Hungry Kids in Schools Act,” would establish a statewide Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program to benefit states that utilize state funds for universal meals. Under the program, the CEP Identified Student Percentage would be zero, but the multiplier would remain 1.6. This bill was referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and it has garnered 12 co-sponsors.
  • H.R. 3113, the “Expanding Access to School Meals Act,” would eliminate the reduced priced category and mandate that the income threshold for determining eligibility for school meals at no cost be 200 percent of the poverty-level. This legislation was referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce and has garnered 9 co-sponsors.

“Keeping kids fed is the right thing to do, and it’s proven to help them focus and learn,” said Rep. Katie Porter “Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce, and nutritious school meals boost achievement, attendance, and behavior, strengthening our nation’s future.” Read more in Rep.
