Too many times when I go to the Doctor all I get is an ear inspection, a blood pressure check and my temperature taken. Then a prescription is hurriedly written and with a firm goodbye, he is out the door. Leaving me to cope once again with one or more side effects, which may or may not include dizziness, bad eyesight, nausea or just the plain “blahs”.
You may have guessed that I am one of the elderly who feels as many other elderly people do, that doctors are treating us while riding by on a galloping horse. They may never tell their patients, but I suspect it is because of Medicare. Not only are Medicare payments lower that other insurance companies, the paper work costs the doctors an extra expense.
I have never received any nutritional advice or recommendation about nutrition.
I had cancer of the colon several years ago. I feared the worst, as most cancer patients do, and was determined to keep my weight up. I had seen so many cancer patients waste away that it had been chiseled into my psyche that I should not lose weight. Through a nutritional supplement, given to me by a friend, I overcame the nausea and thereby kept a fairly good appetite. By eating, my energy level increased and that also helped my appetite.
I was going to a heart specialist at the same time and she chided me for being heavy. I am 6’ 3” and at that time weighed 235 pounds. At the end of my chemo, my oncologist told me that it was rare for someone on chemo to gain a little weight, but I had.
The point is, I don’t think doctors have any street smarts. I don’t think the medical schools are addressing our current day problems. Not for the elderly…not for anyone.
At a time when drugs are at an all time unaffordable high, a time when health insurance companies have increased their premiums while increasing deductibles and dropping coverage on certain conditions, when the health of the elderly has been trampled by the almighty dollar, less expensive treatment is being ignored.
77 million baby boomers are turning grayer by the day. They aren’t like their fathers and grandfathers who accepted their age without response. These baby boomers want to continue to be active. They want to feel good and look good. Believe me they can’t do it all on prescription drugs.
The food supply is less nutritious each passing year. Crops are grown over and over on the same land and the produce gets weaker and weaker. That is why food supplements are such a hit. They work! You feel better after taking them. Plus, you are rebuilding a damaged immune system and your chances of fighting off disease are much improved.
Your father’s father knew better. Even the Bible refers to resting the land 7 years. That may be extreme with today’s knowledge building up the soil by crop rotation and legumes.
You need to see about saving yourself and start taking a food supplement. I take Risotriene, a food supplement principally derived from the outer hull of a rice kernel. The people of India knew of this secret for eons. It could never be commercialized because it would go rancid within hours of being milled. Then a breakthrough by some doctors in California introduced a vegetable enzyme that would give the product a 3-year shelf life. It is now sold through distributorships all across the nation.
It appears that we are going to have to help ourselves when it comes to our health and quality of life. Here is what I am doing. You feel free to do the same:
• Enjoy eating. Don’t try to diet, or count calories. Eat for fun. Just hold down he quantities.
• Take brisk walks. No ambling along. We need to pant a little bit. If your health does not permit brisk walks. Take slow walks. Pace yourself, but get out there.
• Don’t always go looking for a pill.
• Feel good about yourself. Don’t worry so much about thinning hair, wrinkles or liver spots. You are forgiven because you have earned every blemish.
• Retirement is not the end. Stay busy, stay focused.
• Pursue your hobbies or interests. Consider writing a weekly column. At least try. You have a lot to share with younger people.
• Keep a good self-esteem. Have good thoughts about yourself. Remember the old saw, “Do you sing because you are happy, or are you happy because you sing?”
The emphasis must be on preventative medicine rather than drugs and more drugs. Nature can still provide us with much of what we need to protect ourselves. We will always need doctors. They can do a lot toward keeping us alive. So far, they have not offered much toward helping us live a quality life.
